Simple Baked Sweet potato Chips
Baked sweet potato chips offer a delightful culinary experience, marrying the natural sweetness of sweet potatoes with a satisfying crunch. When baked, these thin slices of sweet potato transform into crispy, golden-brown delights with a caramelized exterior that tantalizes the taste buds. The inherent sweetness of the sweet potatoes is subtly enhanced during the baking process, creating a flavor that is both rich and nuanced. Unlike their fried counterparts, these baked chips have a lighter, more delicate texture, with a hint of earthiness that is characteristic of sweet potatoes. The edges of the chips often crisp up beautifully, providing a pleasing contrast to the slightly softer centers. This balance of textures and flavors makes baked sweet potato chips a healthier, yet irresistibly tasty snack option.
Making baked sweet potato chips is a simple and rewarding process. Start by selecting firm, unblemished sweet potatoes and slicing them thinly, ensuring uniform thickness for even cooking. A mandoline slicer is ideal for achieving consistently thin slices, but a sharp knife works well too. Before baking, toss the slices in a light coating of olive oil, which helps them crisp up without becoming greasy. Seasoning is key; a sprinkle of sea salt is essential, and additional flavors like smoked paprika, garlic powder, or a hint of cayenne can be added to suit personal taste preferences. Arrange the slices in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, ensuring they don't overlap, which is crucial for achieving that solid crispness. Bake in a preheated oven at a moderate temperature, flipping the chips halfway through to ensure they cook evenly. The chips are done when they are crispy and golden brown. It's important to keep a close eye on them towards the end of baking to prevent burning. Once out of the oven, let them cool to further develop their crunch, and then enjoy a batch of homemade baked sweet potato chips that are not only flavorful but also a healthier alternative to traditional snacks.
How to Make Chips
Assemble the following ingredients:
- Sweet potatoes (2) – Sweet potatoes bring a natural sweetness with a hint of earthiness, offering a good base that caramelizes slightly when baked.
- Extra-Virgin Olive oil (1 tsp) – Olive oil adds a subtle, fruity richness, enhancing the chips' overall flavor while aiding in achieving a crisp texture.
- Sea salt (1/4 tsp) – Sea salt enhances the natural flavors of the sweet potatoes, providing a savory contrast to their inherent sweetness.
- Black Pepper (to taste)- Black pepper introduces a mild, sharp spiciness that complements the sweetness of the potatoes, adding depth and complexity to each chip.
Use this Method
Slice. Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Using a mandoline, slice sweet potatoes as thinly as possible.
Prep Potatoes. Pat sweet potato slices dry with paper towel, add to medium sized bowl. Spray slices with olive oil mist (or add 1 tsp olive oil) and generously sprinkle with salt, pepper, or any other herbs you'd like to add. Lay slices on baking sheet lined with parchment paper, do not overlap.
Bake. Bake in the oven at 250 for 1 hour, until crispy. Turn oven up to 350 and let chips brown slightly. Watch chips and make sure they do not burn. If you'd like them cool, place on a cooling rack and let sit 10 minutes. Serve and enjoy!
Kitchen notes
Slice Evenly: Use a mandoline slicer for consistent, thin slices of sweet potato. Even thickness is crucial for ensuring that all the chips bake evenly and at the same rate.
Soak to Remove Starch: Soak the sweet potato slices in cold water for about 30 minutes to an hour to remove excess starch. This step is vital for achieving crispier chips.
Dry Thoroughly: After soaking, dry the slices completely with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels. Any moisture left on the slices can prevent them from getting crispy.
Use the Right Amount of Oil: Toss the slices in enough olive oil to coat them lightly. Too much oil can make the chips soggy, while too little can cause them to dry out and burn.
Seasoning: Season with salt and pepper before baking. You can add other seasonings as well, but remember that strong flavors can overpower the sweet potato's natural taste.
Avoid Overcrowding: Arrange the slices in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, making sure they don't overlap. Overcrowding can lead to steaming rather than crisping.
Bake at the Right Temperature: Bake in a preheated oven at a moderate temperature (around 375°F or 190°C). Higher temperatures can burn the chips, while lower temperatures might not crisp them adequately.
Flip the Chips: Halfway through baking, flip the chips to ensure they crisp up evenly on both sides.
Watch Closely: Keep a close eye on the chips, especially towards the end of baking, as they can go from perfectly crispy to burnt quickly.
Cooling is Key: Let the chips cool on the baking sheet after removing them from the oven. They will continue to crisp up as they cool.
Storage: If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container to keep them crisp. However, they are best enjoyed fresh.
