Horchata Spiced Latte

We're pretty sure they will murder us for telling this story, but there was one Christmas in our 20's that one of our family members had a little too much fun at a Christmas Eve party. There was a ton of silliness involved in that night– and a quite painful Christmas morning that involved scooting down the stairs on their backside to get up and open up Christmas presents, followed by a little spiked coffee to bring them back to life.

On the slow, snowy days surrounding Christmas and New Year's, we love to start the festivities in the morning and sit and chat, play games, or hang out and cook all day. This drink is the solid pick-us up after a long holiday night- a little hair of the dog- for mornings when you Cant. Even. It'll even help you soothe your pain from the night before and make scooting down the stairs a bit more memorable!

How to make Horchata Spiked Latte

First you will want to assemble the following ingredients:

  • FUGU Horchata Vodka – you can find this at most liquor stores, it adds a nice alcoholic nature to the drink and adds that distinct Horchata flavor.
  • Strong hot coffee – We recommend espresso for this. If you don't want to make it you can use 2 tbsp of instant espresso powder and 2 tbsp of hot water.
  • Warm milk – “latte” means milk and the warm frothed milk here will add a richness to the latte. You want to use whole milk if you can for the best foam.
  • Whipped cream and Chocolate chips – these two garnishes will add a little pep and fun to your spiked latte. They are of course optional.

Once you have assembled your ingredients use this method

Combine. In a large mug combine the horchata vodka and coffee, stir well to combine.

Froth. Heat the milk and pump in a milk frother or French press until thick and tripled in size. Add over the coffee and vodka in the mug.

Garnish. Top the latte with the whipped cream and chocolate chips and enjoy!

Make it virgin. You can make this a virgin Horchata Spiked Latte by using Horchata milk instead of regular milk and not adding the FUGU Horchata Vodka.

Use espresso. This will taste a lot better if you use espresso. If you don't have an espresso machine, we like to use a stovetop moka pot. They are cheap and work perfectly. We use this one at home.

A few answers

Can we make this with non-dairy milk?

Yes, we would use almond or oat milk with this recipe since they will froth better which is ideal for a latte.

Can we make this decaf?

Yes, use decaf coffee when making the espresso.
