If you're wondering how to cook pork steaks tender in a slow cooker, look no further. This technique is crazy easy, takes almost no extra ingredients, and is suited to keto diets, low carb diets, and other restrictive eating plans since there is no extra sugar or gluten added (check your pork rub if following a strict diet, as there are often preservatives and additives.)

Pork Steaks Recipe Ingredients

To make this recipe, you will need the following ingredients:

  • Pork Steaks: These are the star of the dish, providing a meaty and savory flavor. Pork steaks are typically cut from the shoulder or blade portion of the pig and offer a balance of lean meat and some marbling, which enhances the taste and texture.
  • Pork Rub: The pork rub is a blend of spices and seasonings that add layers of flavor to the pork steaks. It often includes ingredients like paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, brown sugar, and various herbs and spices. The rub not only seasons the meat but also creates a flavorful crust when the steaks are cooked.
  • Celtic Sea Salt: Celtic sea salt, known for its slightly briny and mineral-rich taste, enhances the overall seasoning of the pork steaks. It helps bring out the natural flavors of the meat and the spices in the rub. The salt also aids in tenderizing the pork as it cooks.
  • Fresh Cracked Pepper: Freshly cracked black pepper adds a mild heat and pungency to the pork steaks. It complements the other seasonings in the rub and provides a balanced flavor profile. The cracked pepper also contributes to the appearance of the steaks, adding specks of black to the crust.

Place in slow cooker and cook on high for 4-6 hours, until fork tender (our slow cookers vary wildly – check pork after 4 hours, and adjust cook time if not tender yet.)

Serve & Enjoy!

When pork is fork tender, remove and serve with rice, vegetables, or a salad – or shred and enjoy in tacos, burritos, or a pulled pork sandwich!

Kitchen notes

Pat pork dry. We like to be sure the seasonings we are adding to the pork stick and sink in, so we are sure to pat them dry before adding the rub.

Don't add extra liquid. We're cooking thick cut pork steaks (or thick bone in chops) – which have plenty of fat. Don't add in extra moisture – you don't need it in the slow cooker!

Use a Rub you love. This recipe is totally adaptable – you can use pork rub, bbq pork rub, herbs de provence seasoning, taco mix, ranch dressing seasoning – any herb mix you love.

Instant Pot as Slow Cooker. Use your Instant Pot's slow cooker settings and use directions: to speed up the cooking process, you can use an electric pressure cooker. Follow prep instructions below: Add pork steaks to instant pot inner pot. Close lid and set to seal. Seal and cook on high pressure for 15 minutes, natural release for 15 minutes before quick release.

Pork Chops vs. Pork Steaks

Pork Chops and Pork Steaks taste the same – but look different, and are cut from different part of the pork loin. All the meat along the loin is considered pork chops – but the front and back parts of the loin have different bones.

The center cut rib pork chop and the ribeye pork steak both come from the center of the loin – though their bones are different. Both pork chops and pork steaks can be dry if overcooked or cooked wrong – but are easy if done correctly.

We like to cook them either in a slow cooker (slow and low), or seared in a pan and then baked in a hot oven to bring solid, tender and never-dry pork.

For pork steaks though, this slow cooker pork steak recipe is our absolute favorite.

How Long to Cook Pork Steaks

Since pork steaks are cut from the pork blade, or shoulder, they taste best when given plenty of time to cook. This recipe takes about five hours in a slow cooker to slowly break down fat and tissue that are more prevalent in the blade than a pork chop.

How to Make Pork Steaks Tender

This recipe is designed to bring tender, juicy pork – by letting the slow cooker do all the work for you. Pork blade is a cut with more fat and tissue that needs to be broken down slowly – and will be tough, not tender – when rushed. Give the slow cooker time to do all the work for you – to make a pork steak tender, all you need is time!

What to do With Pork Steaks

When our pork steaks are done cooking and have rested, we serve them as a main dish with vegetables and a side dish like rice pilaf. You can also chop up the pork to use in tacos or burritos, over salad, or in wraps!
