Salted Lime Tequila Shots
It's almost Cinco De Mayo time- and while the usual Cinco De Mayo festivities for us include more chips, salsa, and tacos than tequila (it's a long story- but let's say we don't get along), we had to share this fun, easy and good way to celebrate- Salted Lime Tequila Shooters!
Now, we've been planning to put this post out a while, and we know the recent lime shortage makes this a little pricey… which is a total and complete buzzkill. But if you live in a place where limes aren't $2 a piece (you lucky schmuck!!!), don't mind reusing (which we totally do and condone) or are using lime juice in a recipe already and have the lime hulls to spare- this is one drink twist you don't want to miss!
These are awesome to serve at parties! You can rub a little alcohol on the limes after people drink out of them if you're germ-phobic and trying to make the precious lime hulls last- or ask your guests to hang on to their shooters. You can also serve mini margaritas in them, or use them as a vessel for jello shots.
Our Pro Tip
Lime Tip
You can also use key limes. They are smaller, and a little bit of a different taste, but are much less expensive right now. And when the price of limes comes back down (someday, someday!!!) you'll be glad to have this awesome presentation in your bag of party tricks!
How to Make solid Lime Tequila Shooters
First assemble the following ingredients:
- Cocktail Salt – Cocktail salt adds a savory, mineral-rich edge that enhances the sharpness of the lime and balances the fiery warmth of the tequila.
- Lime – Lime provides a bright, citrusy burst of acidity that complements and elevates the flavors of tequila while adding a refreshing zing.
- Tequila – Tequila brings a robust, smooth heat with earthy and slightly sweet notes, forming the backbone of the lime tequila shooter.
Use this Method
Prep Limes. Cut a small part off the base of the lime, so it can stand upright on it's own. Do not cut so far you have a hole in the lime- you're cutting just enough off to make a small flat surface.
Salt Rims. Dip the rim of the lime in a small bowl of water, then shake of excess liquid. Dip the rim of the lime in cocktail salt.
Finish. Carefully pour tequila into lime.
Kitchen notes
Chill the Tequila: Keep the tequila in the freezer before serving to ensure it's cold, which smooths out the flavor and makes the shooter more refreshing.
Fresh Lime Juice: Always use freshly squeezed lime juice for the best flavor. Roll the lime on the counter before cutting to release more juice.
Proper Salt Application: Use a wedge of lime to moisten the rim of the shot glass before dipping it into the cocktail salt for an even, clean salt rim.
Use Quality Tequila: Choose a good quality 100% agave tequila, as it will make a significant difference in the taste of the shooter.
Balancing the Salt: Avoid over-salting the rim by only coating half of the glass, giving guests the option to sip with or without the salt.
Garnish with Style: Add a small slice of lime on the rim for an extra touch of presentation and a burst of citrus aroma.
Serve Immediately: Serve the shooters right after preparation to keep the lime juice fresh and the salt from dissolving.
Experiment with Flavored Salts: Try using flavored salts like chili-lime or smoked salt for a unique twist on the classic shooter.
Practice the Technique: solid the order—lick the salt, shoot the tequila, and then bite the lime—to enhance the overall experience.
What to Enjoy with Shooters
Tacos: Spicy or tangy tacos, especially with grilled fish or carne asada, pair perfectly with tequila shooters.
Guacamole and Chips: The creamy, rich texture of guacamole balances the sharpness of the tequila and lime.
Ceviche: Fresh ceviche with citrus and seafood flavors complements the zesty nature of the shooter.
Quesadillas: Cheesy quesadillas with a side of salsa or pico de gallo offer a good contrast to the sharpness of the tequila and lime.
Spicy Salsas: Pair with spicy salsa and chips for a fiery combination that matches the heat of the tequila.
Street Corn (Elote): Grilled Mexican street corn with lime, cheese, and chili adds a savory and tangy flavor to the experience.
