At Avdaye, we add lots of tips in all of our recipes – because we are a home cook without any formal training, and we find we are more confident making dishes when we understand why it works, and what each ingredient means to the flavor of a recipe. Our goal is for even the most beginner home cook to feel empowered in the kitchen.
What are Stroopwafels?
Stroopwafels – like the ones United Airlines serves on some flights – are thin Dutch cookies that are a bit like a cross between a crepe, a waffle, and a cookie.
The cookies are thin, but cooked on a waffle-style iron, and served with melted caramel sandwiched between two cookies.
In Amsterdam, stroopwafels are sold in tons of shops and on stands throughout the city and in markets – you can also get them dipped in chocolate!
Stroopwafels are an good treat – and something you MUST sample when visiting Amsterdam!
If you're stateside, you can order them in bulk – our husband likes to pop them in the microwave for a few seconds to warm them up, and we love to dunk them in coffee or tea.

Visiting Amsterdam
Head to Albert Cuyp to browse the market stalls, pop into the adorable shops, get some good frites – and of course, hot, good, perfectly melty stroopwafels!
We love watching them make stroopwaffles in the market – it's cool to see them come together, especially as they are dipped in chocolate.
Albert Cuyp is great for people watching, and a short stroll from many parts of the city.
When we visited, we stayed at the Kimpton – it is gorgeous, has a fabulous bar, and reasonably priced valet parking.
What Vodka to Use
You can use any vodka you like for this cocktail – but we love adding different flavored vodkas in this mixed drink to add different notes.
We are calling for Smirnoff Kissed Caramel vodka – but you can use vanilla, whipped cream, cake, or or plain vodka, too!
