How to Make Easy Banana Donut Holes
These little doughnut holes are so good- but technically, they aren't doughnut holes. We're not frying them- we're “baking” them in a cake pop machine (if you dont have a cake pop machine you can also use a cake pop pan, but that will add about 10 minutes to the time).
Banana Bread Donut Hole Ingredients
First assemble the following ingredients:
- Flour (1 ½ cups) – All-purpose flour provides the structure that helps the doughnut holes bake up soft, tender, and perfectly fluffy.
- Baking soda (1 tsp) – Baking soda reacts with the bananas and other ingredients to give the doughnut holes a light, airy texture.
- Butter (½ cup, softened) – Softened butter adds richness, moisture, and a good buttery flavor while creating a tender crumb.
- Eggs – Eggs bind the ingredients together while adding structure, moisture, and a soft, cake-like texture.
- Sugar (1 1/2 cups) – Granulated sugar sweetens the batter, and an extra coating of sugar creates a crisp, sweet finish after baking.
- ripe bananas (2) – ripe bananas provide natural sweetness, plenty of moisture, and the signature banana bread flavor that makes these doughnut holes irresistible.
- Vanilla extract (1 tbsp) – Vanilla extract enhances the sweetness and rounds out the warm banana flavor with a subtle aromatic note.
- Milk (½ cup) – Milk adds moisture to the batter, helping create a smooth consistency and a soft, tender bite.
- Cinnamon (¼ cup) – Ground cinnamon mixed with the sugar creates a warm, cozy coating that gives each doughnut hole its classic cinnamon-sugar finish.
Steps to Make Banana Bread Doughnut Holes
Assemble Topping. Fill a large bowl or paper bag with cinnamon and sugar to top and set aside.
Mix Wet Ingredients. Cream together sugar and butter in a stand mixer. Add the bananas to the mixer and mix to combine. Add in eggs, mix thoroughly then add in vanilla, milk and extracts.
Finish Batter. Slowly fold in flour and baking soda- be careful not to overmix. Pour batter into a squeeze bottle or a ziploc bag with the tip cut off. Squeeze batter to fill bottom of a well heated and greased cake pop machine.
Cook. Cook according to manufacturers directions (about 5 minutes).
Dust. While piping hot out of the machine, dump into sugar and cinnamon bag/bowl and toss to evenly coat.
Eat immediately and enjoy!
Kitchen notes
Go light on the topping. You can also add a little cinnamon to the topping- but we like these with a bit of sugar. These are sure to be a big hit with your whole family, for breakfast, lunch or an anytime snack!
Experiment with Mix-ins. Once you have mastered the basic recipe try adding in other ingredients like nuts, chocolate chips, or even dried fruit.
Store them Well. Store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, keep them in the refrigerator for up to a week, or freeze them for up to 3 months.
Glaze or Sprinkle. If you want to up the sweetness you can roll them in cinnamon sugar while warm or drizzle them with a glaze made from powdered sugar and milk.

What type of bananas should we use?Use overripe bananas that are brown and spotty. They are sweeter and have a stronger banana flavor, suited to baked goods.
Can we make the batter ahead of time? It's best to use the batter immediately after preparing it to ensure the leavening agents work effectively. However, you can refrigerate the batter for up to 24 hours if necessary.
How do we ensure the donut holes are moist?Do not overmix the batter and add ingredients like sour cream or Greek yogurt for added moisture. Also, ensure not to overbake them.
How do we know when the donut holes are done?Insert a toothpick into the center of a donut hole. If it comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs, they are done. The tops should also spring back when lightly pressed.
Can we use whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour?Yes, you can use whole wheat flour, but it may result in a denser texture. You can also use a 50/50 mix of whole wheat and all-purpose flour for a balance of nutrition and lightness.
